Can Engineered Hardwood Floors Be Refinished?

First, know which floor you actually have

Before you rent a sander or call anyone, it helps to be sure what is under your feet. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom. Engineered hardwood is a top layer of real wood bonded to a core of plywood or fiberboard. From standing height the two can look identical, and plenty of homeowners assume theirs is solid when it is not.

The difference matters for one reason: refinishing removes material. Solid wood gives you a thick slab to work with, which is why it can be sanded and recoated many times across its life. Engineered wood gives you only that top layer, often called the wear layer or veneer. Sand through it and you reach the core, and at that point there is no bringing the wood back.

The honest answer: often yes, sometimes no

Most engineered floors can be refinished at least once, and many can handle it more than that. But it is not a guarantee, and it comes down to how thick the wear layer is and how much of it is left. A floor built with a generous veneer can usually be sanded and refinished much like solid wood. A floor with a thin veneer might only tolerate a light surface treatment, and a very thin one may not be a safe candidate for sanding at all.

The risk is specific and unforgiving. Aggressive sanding on a thin veneer can cut straight through to the plywood beneath, especially at board edges and along high-traffic paths where the wood is already worn. Once that happens on even a few boards, the fix is replacement, not refinishing.

If you cannot tell from any of these, treat the floor as thin until proven otherwise. Caution costs you nothing. A sander that has already bitten through the veneer costs you a new floor.

When a full sand makes sense

A complete sand-and-refinish is worth considering when the wear layer is thick enough to lose a pass, and when the damage is more than surface deep. Think gouges, deep scratches that catch a fingernail, water staining, or a finish that has worn away in whole sections rather than just dulled. In those cases a light treatment will not reach the problem, and the floor genuinely needs to be taken back to bare wood.

This is also the moment when the stakes are highest, so it is the strongest argument for bringing in someone who works with engineered floors regularly. The depth of a sanding pass, the grit sequence, and how the edges are handled all change when there is only a thin veneer to protect.

When a lighter touch is the smarter move

If your floor mostly looks tired rather than damaged, it may not need sanding at all. A surface that is scuffed, cloudy, or covered in fine scratches but still structurally sound is often a candidate for a screen-and-recoat, where the top coat is abraded lightly and a fresh finish is applied over it. This leaves the veneer almost entirely intact and can be repeated far more often than a full sand.

For a thin-veneer engineered floor, this lighter approach is sometimes the only responsible option. It will not remove deep stains or change the wood color, but it restores sheen and protection without spending the veneer you cannot replace.

Signs your floor may already be at its limit

Some engineered floors have simply reached the end of what they can give. Watch for these:

What a pro checks before touching your floor

A good refinisher does not start sanding on day one. They inspect first. Expect them to look at an exposed edge to confirm the veneer thickness, test how the existing finish responds, check for moisture or subfloor issues, and look for any earlier refinishing work. From there they can tell you honestly whether your floor should be fully sanded, screened and recoated, or left alone.

That inspection is also your best protection against a bad outcome. Anyone willing to quote a full sand-and-refinish on an engineered floor without checking the wear layer first is guessing with your floor, and the downside of that guess is a floor you have to replace.

The bottom line

Engineered hardwood can usually be refreshed, and often refinished outright, as long as there is enough wear layer to work with. The whole decision turns on that thin top layer: how thick it started, how much is left, and how much the job needs to remove.
